KALAMKAAR GROUNDWATER
All the water we use in our manufacturing processes comes from our own groundwater source. We've managed to go off-grid in our water use by using an ancient technology known as a ‘Gharki’.
The Gharkis we have built collect rainwater and prevent urban flooding in the area. They also
provide water to the deepest roots of the trees.
At Kalamkaar, our environment has always been a main priority. We discovered a structure called a ‘Gharki’ that is still found in Lahore’s oldest buildings, which restores water to the water table.
The fresh water collected by our Gharkis is enough for all our manufacturing processes. These simple structures can be seen all over the gardens of our flagship showroom.
Gharki is also known as groundwater, which is hidden underground. During rain, some of that
water soaks into the ground and fills up spaces in the soil and rocks.
Storing water is extremely important for us as it benefits us in numerous ways. We don’t believe in wasting water; it is our duty to use water wisely. Islam teaches us to only use how much water we actually require; we shouldn’t indulge in wasting our natural goods. These natural resources are the most essential part of our lives; without water, it will be quite difficult for mankind to survive. The human population won’t be able to live for more than a week. We need to learn the importance of our natural resources and not take anything for granted.
We should motivate our people to store water and refrain from wasting it. Kalamkaar is proud to be in a community that knows the value of water; we stepped forward to build Gharkis in our entire flagship showroom. Gharki collects water and stores it in a water table for our plants, flowers, and ducks. We also use our stored water for other purposes as well.
When we learned about Gharkis, we were impressed by their structure and purpose, and immediately took action to have them built in our entire area. It is the best way to save water; Gharkis are extremely useful, and we highly recommend them. They can also be found in many areas of the old walled city of Lahore, where people are still benefiting from them. We want more people to learn about them and have them built in their area.

KALAMKAAR ENERGY CONSERVATION
Kalamkaar has adopted various traditional methods to save energy and maintain a cooler and more peaceful atmosphere in our flagship showroom. These simple and traditional methods offer various benefits, with energy conservation being paramount.
One unique method Kalamkaar has embraced to cool and clean our area involves utilizing red materials made from 'Keri,' which are waste bricks from kilns. These materials absorb rainwater and minimize energy consumption.
Additionally, we've implemented a second roof above our showroom to help keep the inside cool. We utilize waste materials to create Keri, which is then used for our driveway.
Another effective method to maintain a cooler environment is through excessive tree planting. Trees play a crucial role in creating a green environment with a cooling effect. At Kalamkaar, we prioritize natural and sustainable methods, incorporating various tree species and numerous verandas into our flagship showroom.
Our showroom houses trees that are over forty years old, significantly contributing to the cooling of our area. Planting trees has been a rewarding experience for us, offering a practical solution to overcome the summer heat and improve overall comfort.
These simple yet effective methods have greatly benefited us, proving that traditional techniques have a great impact, not only during the summer but throughout the year.
As part of our commitment to energy conservation, Kalamkaar has explored innovative ways to reduce energy consumption. Our double roof system, featuring a one meter gap, helps airflow, ensuring the showroom to remain cool. We are impressed by the ancient techniques used to maintain a cool environment and various water storage methods.
The second roof design allows cool air to circulate over the building while shielding it from direct sunlight, significantly reducing the need for artificial cooling. This way we don’t have to use air conditioners and consume energy, it reduces the cost for electricity and cools the area much better.
Moreover, our driveway contributes to the cooler atmosphere. The strategic placement of a second roof creates an airflow gap, naturally cooling the building even in the hottest weather.
By utilizing waste materials from brick-making, such as 'Keri,' in our driveway construction, we not only enhance aesthetics but also promote heat absorption and rainwater drainage into the water table. Consider implementing this decorative solution in your own home to achieve similar benefits.
We are committed to employing natural and sustainable methods to conserve energy. From tree planting to the integration of verandas, we strive to create a comfortable and environmentally friendly space for our people.
